On 13 February 2023 the Department of Home Affairs announced that the 2022 concessions aimed to improve permanent residence access to migrant skilled workers are being expanded to include more occupations.
The changes were originally introduced on 1 July 2022 to improve access to permanent residence for skilled migrant workers who chose to stay in Australia during the pandemic.
To recap, Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) subclass 482 visa holders who have been in Australia for at least one year between 1 February 2020 and 14 December 2021, are eligible to apply for permanent residence through the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream of the subclass 186 visa.
The Government is now advising that in addition to Short-term stream TSS visa holders, this pathway is also available to Medium-term stream TSS visa holders with an occupation on the Regional Occupation List (ROL). This pathway is currently available until 1 July 2024.
Amendments to the legislation may be required before the TSS/TRT concessions can be accessed by Subclass 482 visa holders with ROL occupations. Holders are advised to exercise caution and seek professional advice from a Registered Migration Agent before lodging their application.
