On 21 February 2023 the Home Affairs Minister announced extensions to Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visas. The extensions will be made available by application from 1 July 2023 for graduates of select tertiary qualifications.
International higher education graduates with select qualifications will be granted an extra two years of post-study work rights. The extension is in addition to the existing additional one to two years of work rights for eligible students who study, live and work in regional areas.
Graduates with a Bachelor, Honours or Masters degree will be eligible for a visa with a further two year validity if their qualification is listed on the Department of Education’s ‘Eligible Qualifications List (EQL).’ All doctoral graduates will be eligible for a further two year validity.
Post-study work rights for select degrees in areas of verified skill shortages will be increased from:
• Two years to four years for select Bachelor degrees
• Three years to five years for select Masters degrees
• Four years to six years for all doctoral qualifications.
The EQL is an indicative list of the occupations and qualifications which would allow students to be eligible for the extension of post-study work rights. The full list of eligible courses will be published before the implementation date of 1 July 2023. Students and prospective applicants will need to refer to the comprehensive list, when published, to confirm the eligibility of their particular course.
All doctoral studies are considered eligible for the measure, regardless of field of study and so are not listed individually.
The Department advised that it will provide more details on eligibility and how to apply for the extended Temporary Graduate Visa closer to 1 July 2023.
The main beneficiaries of the new extended 485 visa are graduates of medical, health and teaching courses. At the time of publishing this article, the EQL contains the following qualifications:
